Per obitum, 1587-1899.

These are registers of collations to vacant benefices compiled by an official who bore the title per obitum. However, the collations concern more than benefices vacant because of the death of the holder. The per obitum position also handled benefices vacant for other reasons, for example, dismissal and vacancy due to incompetency, murder, abandonment, abuse, illness, assumption of another position. The registers of this series present the provisions in alphabetical order by diocese. Donnelly (cf. below) states that the importance of this series is that it provides the only record for some of the priests listed, and on occasion, a researcher can trace the succession in benefices through this series when other records fail. This series is continued by the Dataria Apostolica series Summaria provisionum, 1900-1916 (ID VATV10012-A).

As early as the fourteenth century, the precise date on which the pope granted a particular favor was often a matter of crucial importance. The dating of the supplication, which could be also antedated, signaled the moment from which the grant of the grace had juridical validity. This became important if the same benefice was granted to two persons, because the earliest dated concession generally carried priority. There were other instances where a date might be important, for examp...
